With over a hundred cameras already in place, big brother is expanding it’s ability to watch citizens in downtown Greenville.  According to WSPA news, Police Chief Terri Wilfong is requesting half a million dollars to expand the surveillance program on the sidewalks of the city.

The upstate’s largest camera system, which consists of 120 ‘all-seeing-eyes’ will grow larger as officials seek to install more cameras in the downtown area.

The Chief says the plan is to add a number of new cameras in areas that don’t have them, like Brown Street, which was recently the focus of a downtown improvement project. She also says they need “some eyes” on the West End, where a large amount of development is going on. “We’ve got a lot of new visitors coming to our area, and this ensures them that they’re safe,” says Wilfong.

In addition to the new cameras, the funds will also be used to upgrade previously installed cameras from analog to digital in order to “increase their investigative capability”.  The chief also says that there have been times when the current cameras cannot provide enough detail for investigators to pinpoint a suspect.  “It might be too dark or grainy,” she says.  “With the new system, you’ll be able to zoom in so close you could tell if their eyes are brown or blue.”

The $500,000 is listed as part of the city’s capital improvement plan, and will be spent over the course of four years. City Council must give the final approval to the funding before the system is changed.
